This herbal extract is more potent than the Mama's Milk Herbal Tea, and is a great alternative for the non tea-drinkers.

Breastmilk supply is dependent on many factors. But one way to help is with specific herbs.

Herbs that help boost milk supply are called galactogogues (ga-lac-ta-gogs).

This word hails from the mid 19th century, from Greek gala, galakt- ‘milk’ + agōgos ‘leading’.

Galactagogue herbs have a long history of use and are thought to work by increasing prolactin release. Prolactin is a woman’s main breastmilk producing hormone. It's released into the bloodstream in response to the sucking stimulus.

According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, galactagogues work best when breastmilk is being removed frequently and effectively from a mother’s breasts. When all factors contributing to a low supply have been identified and addressed, then galactagogues may help to speed up the process.

A herbal extract (also known as a herbal tincture) is an alcohol base extraction of the herb.

This extraction method results in a high potency preparation, with high absorbency and fast-acting properties.

This means you don't need to take much to get the medicinal effect.

Mama's Milk is a Naturopath formulated blend of 3-4 specific herbs to support breastmilk supply.

Contains: Galega officinalis (Goat's Rue), Asparagus racemosa (Shatavari), Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel), Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) [optional] as liquid herbal extract/tinctures.

Why is Fenugreek optional?

Fenugreek is a well known and effective galactagogue herb. Yet it may not suit everyone, so it's optional within this product.

Taking Fenugreek may be an issue for some women who have blood sugar problems, blood clotting problems or a thyroid condition. In these circumstances it's recommended to use Fenugreek under the guidance of a GP.

Large amounts of Fenugreek may cause lowering of blood sugar. Therefore it's cautioned for women with diabetes.

Fenugreek should be avoided in women taking anticoagulants, due to a theoretical increased bleeding risk. Fenugreek may also interact with the blood thinning medication warfarin.

Some women and/or their babies are sensitive to Fenugreek. Some mums notice their baby is fussy and/or has green, watery stools and colic type symptoms when using Fenugreek.

As Fenugreek is a legume plant, those mums who are sensitive to certain foods such as peanuts, chickpeas or other legumes may experience a cross reaction to Fenugreek.

A common side effect of taking Fenugreek is the excretion of a maple syrup type odour from the urine, sweat and possibly breastmilk.

The dose is 5ml, 3 x day.

Dilute the dose in a little water or juice and take preferably before meals.
